Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying Him, and committing yourself firmly to Him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord, you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
Deuteronomy 30:15, 19-20, NLT
Every time I sit down and read God’s word, I marvel at how much He has given us right here in the Bible. He really has given us everything pertaining to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3)–the necessary tools for living this life, especially while waiting.
There have been many books published out there that talk about or promise to reveal the keys to prosperity, blessings, success, health, finances, etc. Don’t get me wrong: I am not discounting them at all. Yet, without this one key, mentioned in this month’s scripture focus, all those other things really won’t matter.
What’s so interesting and cool about these verses is that God has given us the choice on whether we use the key He is giving us.
It depends on us.
The choices we make every day not only affect us, but our descendants as well–those coming after us–even if we never live to see the effects.
Our first choice, of course, should be to choose Jesus. All other choices are contingent about this important one.
As you meditate on these verses this month, consider these questions:
- What choice(s) will you make this month that either lead to life or death, prosperity or disaster, blessings or curses?
- What is heaven and earth witnessing about the daily choices you make?
- In what ways are you choosing to love the Lord, obey Him and commit yourself firmly to Him, i.e. the key to life?
